Early Pregnancy Ultrasound is used to confirm dates of conception and assess the early health of your pregnancy. This scan is usually carried out at around 8 weeks of your pregnancy. It may also be helpful to perform an internal scan transvaginal scan. Both types of scan are safe, and are carried out with minimal discomfort. We require you to have a full bladder during this scan. Please drink one litre of water one hour before your appointment and try your best not to empty your bladder. If you experience difficulty doing this, please talk to us at the time of booking. You are not permitted to take photos or video during the scan.

A first trimester early pregnancy and dating ultrasound is an examination you have during the first 13 weeks of pregnancy. Due to the size of the developing structures and embryo, it is uncommon to perform an ultrasound before 5 weeks gestation 5 weeks after the start of your last menstrual period. Ultrasound is not consistently able to confirm viability and fetal heart activity prior to 6 weeks gestation, so unless there is an urgent need to have an early pregnancy and dating scan earlier most of these ultrasounds are performed after 6 weeks and ideally at 8 weeks for dating purposes.
Urgent cases may still be performed earlier, please discuss this with your referring doctor.

At 7 weeks gestation a pregnancy sac should be seen within the uterus. Within this sac will be an embryo, heart motion and yolk sac should be visible.
Approaching 8 weeks, early brain formation is identified with a black space in the head called the rhombencephalon. Sometimes it may be too early to gather all the information required to confirm the stage of your pregnancy. In this situation you may be required to return for a repeat ultrasound in days. Your doctor will inform you of the most appropriate time frame to return for this scan if required.
If you have completed an IVF cycle and have received a positive pregnancy result at day 16, an internal ultrasound will be performed approximately 5 weeks following your embryo transfer.

A dating scan is an ultrasound examination which is performed in order to establish the gestational age of the pregnancy. Most dating scans are done with a trans-abdominal transducer and a fullish bladder. If the pregnancy is very early the gestation sac and fetus will not be big enough to see, so the transvaginal approach will give better pictures.

Dating scans confirm the age of the pregnancy and provide an accurate due date. They can also show whether it is a single or multiple pregnancy twins or more. Dating scans can be performed from 6 weeks of pregnancy. The due date can also be confirmed during a nuchal translucency scan or week pregnancy screening scan — see below.
