By the Grace of God first look: François Ozon delineates a triptych of church trauma cases
Melvil Poupaud began his year career with Raoul Ruiz and today is filming Nicolas Pariser’s first film. He has built a demanding and original filmography and, splitting himself between two roles, uses all his talents as a director, writer and musician. At the age of 43, Melvil Poupaud already has 33 years of film work behind him. A child actor for the great Chilean filmmaker Raoul Ruiz, he grew up in cinema and his filmography which includes 57 films to date reveals him at every age, from the innocence of childhood to the seriousness of adolescence, from a trendy, stylish young adult to a meditative mature man, always with the same characteristic inimitable grace.
Gaspard (played by Melvil Poupaud) and Margot (played by Amanda Langlet) her easily with other people, and she rejects the use of dating advertisements.
Gone is the sense of play or formal trickiness, replaced by an elegant but forensic, almost documentary style, and a palpable intensity to do right by his subject matter. She arranges a meeting between Alexandre and Preynat, who confesses to his crimes; but it becomes quickly becomes evident that the Church does not intend to take action against Preynat, just to get him to ask for forgiveness.
In response, Alexandre embarks on a one-man mission to get others to come forward and get Preynat defrocked. At this point By The Grace Of God adopts a kind of relay-race structure, where the film follows different victims who pick up the baton of activism. But it emerges as a fast-paced compelling procedural, a kind of Spotlight played out by committed amateurs rather than investigative journalists. As timely and pressing as a hour-news ticker tape, Ozon has found another colour to add to his considerable palette: angry integrity.

He wanted to work with me though, because he had seen a few films I was in, so I was just supposed to play a supporting part. But then this other actor left the project abruptly, and when Xavier needed to find another quickly, he thought of me. You both started acting at quite an early age. MP: Yes. I’m much older, of course, but yes, I began acting when I was nine.
Did you ever talk about that aspect of your careers, and did you find you both were coming from a similar sort of experience?
With his best film to date, Quebecois wunderkind Xavier Dolan still doesn’t overcome his excessive love of style, but he assuredly makes his mark as a masterful.

For Melvil Poupaud, working on films isn’t just a chance to act–it’s an opportunity to observe great filmmakers at work. While Poupaud’s character’s homosexuality is tangential to the plot he plays a photographer trying to resolve his familial and life issues after finding out that he is terminally ill he nonetheless sleeps with men and women in the film over the course of the story. The subject material is obviously very dense and very serious, dealing with human mortality.
How do you prepare for something like that? I’ve always thought about mortality; it’s a subject I always have in mind. I’m going to die, and I take that as an opportunity to have thoughts about life, to try to find the meaning in life. But I had to think about this every day during shooting, even during the preparation, to understand the character and the way he deals with his death. But after that movie I think I can make a balance between things.
There’s no reason to be anguished about everyday stupid things in life, because you’re going to die anyway. Just enjoy your little bit of the present and the people around you. Tell me about the diet you had to go on so your character would waste away. Were you able to take your physical discomfort at not eating and put it into the character?

Over the film’s brief 81 minutes, though, he finds something like peace, moving through the stages of acceptance.
